Vankirk School

The first Vankirk School was a log building used until 1908.  It was replaced by the frame building that was used until 1952.  In 1898, Charles Vankirk leased the school board ½ acre of ground for school purposed for $50. According to the minutes of the school board, the school had been there without a lease, but felt a lease was necessary before drilling a well.  Charles Vankirk lived on Johnson Rd where the stone barn is located.   The owners planned to make it a residence, but wanted a basement.  They had the building up on jacks and had dug out beneath it when a storm blew in and collapsed the building!  Larry Wall built a home on or near the spot where the school stood on Vankirk Ridge Rd.
