Lone Pine Memorial

582 Lone Pine Rd
Washington, PA  15301

The Community Honor Roll was erected in Lone Pine next to the church for the veterans of World War II.  The Honor Roll was started in the Spring of 1944 and dedicated on December 3, 1944.  The original monument contained 145 names of veterans from all branches of the military.

The Amwell Township Historical Society restored the monument in 2015-2016 and added the names of veterans that have served from Lone Pine since the original monument was erected.  Lone Pine Church has a short Memorial Day Service with the VFW on the Sunday before Memorial Day near this monument.

Cook Dodd Cabin

Amity Ridge Rd
Amity, PA  15311

The Cook-Dodd cabin was built in 1785 on Route 19 in the village of Amity, Pa.  It is one of the original cabins built on one of the twenty-two town lots which Daniel Dodd and Ziba Cook advertised in the Western Telegraph and Washington Advertiser in 1797.  The cabin was built on lot #6 (65 ft. by 165ft.) with a dug well, which served the small village.  The cabin is unique since it has a double fireplace, a huge lintel, a loft and a half dug cellar.  The cabin size is 24.5 ft. by 20 ft. The Cook-Dodd cabin was given to the Amwell Township Historical Society in 2005 by D. Reed and Margaret Farabee.  In 2006, the Historical Society tore the building down and began the process of restoring it on the same location and with the same dimensions as the original.  Between, 2007-2012, members worked to restore it, using most of the original logs.  The cabin is a Registered Landmark by the Washington County Landmarks Foundation!

Amity War Memorial
Amity Ridge Rd
Amity, PA  15311

As many communities did, Amity constructed an honor roll for the veterans of WW I & WW II.  First was a wooden one and then the stone one.  The stone monument was dedicated on May 31 1948.  It was struck by a car at least once and repaired.  The Amwell Township Historical Society restored it and added names of veterans that have served since the original was erected.

Each year Amity hosts a Memorial Day service to celebrate all of our veterans and the sacrifices that they have made!

Old Cemetery at
North Ten Mile Baptist Church

322 Ridge Church Rd
Amity, PA  15311

The church held services in a log structure located east of the present building that was built in 1786 on a tract of land called "Big Rocks" (a stone marker erected in 1948 presently indicates the location).  The original cemetery is tucked down in the woods near the location of the log church.  It is well maintained and there is a mowed path if you are up for a bit of a walk, you can park at the church and walk down.

West Amity Postcard.jpg

West Amity Train Station

W Hillsboro Rd
Amity, PA  15311

The Washington & Waynesburg Railroad ran through Amwell Township.  This is the only surviving station in our township!  It was originally located down in the bottom where the tracks ran but was moved up near the house to keep it safe from vandals.

The Waynesburg & Washington Railroad was a narrow gauge line that ran between Washington & Waynesburg. The company was incorporated in 1875, ran steam passenger service until July 9, 1929 and steam freight service until April 6, 1933. Speeder service lasted into the 1950s. The rails were scrapped in 1978.

7 Miller Sisters bath.JPG

Miller Sister Home
11 Sposato Rd
Amity, PA  15311

The well-known Miller Sisters, Edna & Nellie, were 2 of the 5 children of John Calvin & Margaret Ann “Maggie” Miller.  Lots of stories have been told of the sisters that lived in a shack near the intersection of Sposato Rd and Montgomery Run Rd.  They lived in the house and according to the stories, they burned the house down while burning newspapers to keep warm.  After the house burned they started living in the barn which also burned down.  Finally, they moved into the chicken coop or shack that they are remembered to have lived in.  Remnants of the foundation on the shack were visible for many years after it fell in.  The sisters were born in 1904 and 1906, I found them listed on the censuses in 1910, 1920, 1930, & 1940, people have said that they thought Nellie was a teacher, but she doesn’t have a profession listed on any of the censuses. Their parents died in 1943 and 1950, so the stories are from 1950 to the 1970’s when both sisters passed away.  If you look in the creek across from the driveway, you will see the hollowed out place in the creek where the sisters bathed and washed their clothes.

Lone Pine Christian Church
(aka the Disciples Church at Pleasant Valley)

582 Lone Pine Rd
Washington, PA  15301

On April 8, 1857, David Frazee, Sr., and David Slusher gave a deed "to the Christian Church, composed of the Disciples of Christ meeting at Pleasant Valley, in Amwell township, Washington County, for one dollar, of three acres, strict measure," of land, to be held sacred to the construction of a cemetery and the erection of a meeting-house, and for no other purpose.  (Transcription from "Rural Reflections of Amwell Township", Published in 1976.)  The name of the church was legally changed from Disciple Church of Pleasant Valley to Lone Pine Christian Church in 1872, due to the post office name.

North Ten Mile Baptist 2013.jpg

North Ten Mile Baptist Church

322 Ridge Church Rd
Amity, PA  15311

North Ten Mile Baptist Church is the oldest church in Washington County dating back to December, 1773, giving rise to the church motto, "Telling His-Story since 1773."  Originally known as the Baptist Church on North Fork of Ten Mile Creek,
its founders were anabaptists, or rebaptizers.

The church had no building for its first 13 years after which a log structure located east of the present building was built in 1786 on a tract of land called "Big Rocks" (a stone marker erected in 1948 presently indicates the location).  There have been five church buildings (1786, 1836, 1840, 1872, 1905), the present building originally cost about $10,000.00 and was dedicated June 4, 1905.  The church sits on 17 acres of land and includes a parsonage built in 1914 at a cost of $4034.32.

The church congregation will be 250 years old in December, 2023.  North Ten Mile Baptist Church has called fifty one pastors in its 250 years and is currently searching for a new pastor.

North Ten Mile Baptist Church voluntarily cooperates with the American Baptist and Southern Baptist Denominations.

Sharp House0001.jpg

Zachariah Sharp House

669 Amity Ridge Rd
Amity PA, 15311

Located directly across Rt.19 from the Cook-Dodd cabin, the stone house is situated on lot #5 of the original layout of the village of Amity. The first owner of the lot on which the house was later built was Noah Cook (wife Sara), who was listed on the Amwell Township tax record of 1791.The façade of this two-story house is constructed of cut stone, while the remainder of the house is built of field stone. A bank barn on the property is likely of the same vintage as the house. James Hughes is thought to have built the house in 1832. In 1879, Zachariah and Pauline Sharp built a one-story addition on the back of the house. The addition involves an extension of the southern stone wall of the original structure and two frame walls.  Research shows that Zachariah Sharp “traded in country produce”, which may account for the original two side-by-side front doors. Could one have led to a separate room for trading? One of the doors is now a window. In 1985 a second story was added to the 1879 addition.

Visitors will hear a story about how the house provided refuge and defense for the women, children, and elders of the community during the Civil War when rumors of Morgan’s Raiders, a confederate raiding party led by Gen. John H. Morgan, was thought to be approaching Washington County.

Amity Methodist Church

Amity Ridge Rd
Amity, PA  15311

The Methodist Protestant Church of Amity was organized in 1832 by the Monongahela Circuit. William Iams and Joel Woods, of Amity, invited the Revs. John Wilson and Israel Thorp, itinerant ministers of the church, to preach at Amity in the fall of 1831. Early in January, 1832, a class was organized at the house of William Iams.  Soon after the organization the society purchased the old log church use by the Presbyterians for fifty dollars, they being about to erect a new one. A lot was donated by William Iams, upon which they erected a house of the logs of the old church. This they used as a place of worship until 1851, when they erected on the same site, and at a cost of $500, a new frame house, in which they worshiped till 1867, They sold the old church to Dr. S. S. Strouse, and upon the same site they erected the frame building, thirty-two by thirty-eight feet in size, in which they still continue to worship.

Lower Ten Mile Presbyterian Church

Amity Ridge Rd
Amity, PA  15311

Prior to 1781, services were held in barns and groves near Fort Lindley in Prosperity and Jacob Cooks home in Amity.  In 1781, a log church (known as the Lower Ten Mile Church) was erected at Amity on land donated by Jacob Cook and John Carmichael.  About the same time a church was built at Fort Lindley and became known as the Upper Ten Mile Church.  The Rev Thaddeus Dodd was the founder and first minister of both of these churches, known as the Ten Mile Church.  In 1830, on the site of the log church, a brick church was erected.  It was destroyed by a storm and a frame structure replaced it in 1840.  The present brick church was built in 1875.
Several ministers and lay pastors have served this church over the years, including Pastor Dick Berardinelli who retired in January 2016.

Wherry House.jpg

Wherry House

415 Chestnut Ridge Rd
Washington, PA  15301

Originally believed to be a stagecoach stop on the national road, The Wherry farm was purchased from the Vankirks in 1967.  They were told that a president once stayed there.  We are guessing that it may have been President Harding since he was related to the Vankirks and came to Washington for Vankirk family reunions!  The farm is currently owned by the McAfee’s who are descended from Wallace Wherry.
